Pantone Colour of 2019: Living Coral

I will try not to start all the upcoming features with how it is hard to believe that it is almost 2019… But, seriously, where did 2018 go? It seems like only yesterday I was writing about the colour of the 2018, according to Pantone. It was Ultraviolet.

But they’ve announced the shade of 2019.  And it is 16-1546 Living Coral, described as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge. Vibrant, yet mellow  [Living Coral] embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.”

I have a degree in culture studies so it is always interesting for me to read how Pantone interpret the social and cultural changes, and how that is reflected in a colour.  So here is the official statement:

“In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits,  Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.

Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media”.

What are your thoughts about that description? Do you like the colour itself?

I did feature a few coral makeup products (see the Coral tag) but I have a feeling most of them, if not all, are no longer available.

However, Butter London  (see above) and Sephora are usually great when it comes to coming out with the Pantone’s colour of the year products, so have a look if that is something you are interested in.
