Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Sheer Candy Review, Photos and Swatches

When I first wrote about the lipstick/balm trend back in February I just knew that I had to try Dior Addict and YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Lipstciks/Lip Balms.

You can find my review and swatches of Dior Addict here and today I will tell you my opinion about the YSL.

First of all I have to say that I really love the design. To tell the truth, I used to dislike the golden design  of YSL or D&G but now, although I already like it,  I have to say that I love this silver design much more.

Volupte Sheer Candy has a classic YSL lipstick design which looks chic  and feels heavy. I personally like it.

The second thing that you notice is the delicious mango scent.  I can also say that it tastes nice, it is sweet and light, but don’t ask me how do I know that 😉

As you can see I have three shades and they are:

  • 02 Dewy Papaya, sheer fresh peach
  • 04 Succulent Pomegranate, sheer bright pink with red undertones
  • 06 Luscious Cherry, sheer cherry red with golden shimmer

So what about the application? I find that these lip balms go on smoothly and I personally find them really moisturising and hydrating. They are not gloopy or waxy in any way. I already see you wondering  how  the balm applies on dry, chapped lips and if it enhances the dry patches. Unfortunately, during the last ten days when I was wearing these balms my lips  were in a good condition so I can’t say anything on that.

I also read that you can apply Volupte Sheer Candy on the go, without looking in a mirror, and I have to disagree here. Maybe that will work with the lighter shades but definitely not with the darker shades.

Some complain that Dior have way too many options of their new Dior Addict, so if you are one of them, you would be really happy that YSL has only six shades.

You many have heard that they look very similar because these are just tinted balms. But is it true? How does the shade look like on the lips?

The lighter shades may look very similar on the lips but I haven’t tried them so I can’t confirm or deny it. But as for darker  shades – they look different. And the colour is buildable! You can get a very sheer barely there shade but you can build it up to bright, vibrant and juicy colour. The finish is sheer but the colour is bright and you can definitely see the difference.

For e.g. #4 Succulent Pomegranate may be built up from sheer pink to hot bright pink with dewy finish while 06 Luscious Cherry can be built up to a beautiful vibrant shimmery red.

How about the staying power?

I love to re-apply the lip products so I am not the best person to comment on the staying power.  But I can say that these stay on nicely for at at least two-three hours. They would last longer but I start drinking/eating after that time. There is also one more thing that I’ve noticed. I assume that these work also like a stain because after the lipstick is gone, you lips have this beautiful pink pigment for some time.

I could carry on talking or writing but I would just say that these are, without a doubt, one of the best lip products I have ever tried! And I would recommend you checking them out at your local YSL counter.

The price is £21/$30 from Selfridges and Sephora.
